Separate wire data types from the actual data used on clients and servers. This will facilate multiple
protocol adapters and also allow us to more easily add new serialization such as PB and Avro.

I have this partially done and will post a patch shortly.

I have attached a patch to show how I am approaching the problem.
As explained in Hadoop-7347, the proposal is to separate data types so that main logic is not polluted by the
serialization data types (such as in PB or Avro) and that we can write adapters on client and server side
to support multiple protocols whenever there is discontinuity (such as when we switch to Protocol Buffers(PB) or avro).

DFSClient and NN both use the data types in hdfs.protocol (unchanged).
The actual protocol datatypes that are serialized are in the following packages

        • package protocolR23Compatible - the data types used in Release 23 onwards that will maintain compatibly as
explained in overview.html (basically do not change method signatures - add new types and new methods, etc).
Note I have picked R23 as package name rather then the actual protocol version because R23 onwards we will not
break compatibiulity till we move to PB. If we move to PB in release 23 then we will delete R23. The separation of data types help us do PB.
        • package protocolR20203Compatible is for 20.203 protocol
        • package protocolProtocolBuffers for the protocol buffers

There are two translator for each protocol

        • Client side (protocolR23Compatible.ClientProtocolTranslator) translate to R23 types on client side
        • Server side (protocolR23Compatible.ClientProtocolServerSideTranslator) - translate from R23 type on SSide.

While these translators are simple logic, they increase the maintenance load because each time a new rpc
method is added one has to add a method to these translators. We are exploring how to address this ( perhaps by moving the data type translation/mapping to the rpc layer.)

The following still remains to be done.

        1. Plugging in a translator on the Server side into the NN. The NN implements multiple protocols and have not quite figured out how to do this.
        2. Automatically picking the right protocol on the client side based on the Server's version. I will give more details on this later.
        3. Have the server implement multiple versions (say R20.203 and R23). We want to use the same port and
hence the rpc layer below must demultiplex. Perhaps this will help us solve 1.

Updated patch. The description above still applies.
So far I have only done NN's ClientProtocol. I will add the rest of HDFS rpc protocols.

        • The R23 ClientNamenodeProtocol has been plugged in the NN.
        • I will file a separate jira to picking the right protocol on Client side automatically. This is lower priority.
        • I have a change in common that I need to separate out into another patch.
The tests run fine on my machine.
Please start reviewing the patch and give me feedback.

Hi Sanjay. Since this is a big patch, I want to make sure I understand what's going on. It looks like it does the following:

        1. Move the construction of RPC proxies and wire objects into a "client side translator" class.
        2. Pass a new ServerSideTranslator implementation to the RPC.getServer calls. This ServerSideTranslator translates from wire types back to the generic protocol types.
        3. For each of the current types (eg LocatedBlocks, etc), copy them into a protocolR23Compatible package. For each of these classes, add a static method to convert to/from the generic type in the .protocol package
        4. The Translator classes use the convertTo/convertFrom methods to go from wire types to generic types.

Does this accurately describe the contents of the patch? I want to make sure I got it right before I give specific patch feedback.

        Comments:

        1. DFSClient should just call DFSUtil#createNameNode()
        2. closeConnectionToNameNode() comments in the method is not clear, it abruptly ends. Do we need that comment?
        3. minor: DFSUtil some code is beyond 80 lines. You could also import ClientProtocolDatanodeTranslator.
        4. DatanodeInfo.java - Call existing constructor from newly introduced constructor
        5. NamenodeRpcServer - newly added code indentation is not consistent with the rest of the code

Can you please comment on rest of the changes you are planning to do and when. For example all protocol package classes need not be writable etc.

Yes Todd, you got it right. However I was struck a little bit by your order and that you didn't mention the key item A below.
Hence I re-order your items and add (A). Also see my next comment which explains how I plan to proceed.

        • A. Separate all the datatypes used for wire protocol (called R23 at this time) into package protocolR23Compatible. These data types are not exposed to DFSClient or to the NN. DFSClient and NN use their native HDFS types (which currently reside in o.a.h.hdfs.protocol.) This is done as follows:
          • [Your item 3:] For each of the current types (eg LocatedBlocks, etc), copy them into a protocolR23Compatible package. For each of these classes, add a static method to convert to/from the generic type in the .protocol package
        • B. Create 2 translator classes: ClientXXProtocolTranslator and ClientXXProtocolServerSideTranslator. These translate from to and from wire types R23 to the builtin types of HDFS. (ie mostly what you label as item 4)
        • C. NN and DFSCLient are not exposed to proxies or to R23 data types:
          • [Your item 1] Move the construction of RPC proxies and wire objects into a "client side translator" class.
          • [Your item 2] Pass a new ServerSideTranslator implementation to the RPC.getServer calls. This ServerSideTranslator translates from wire types back to the generic protocol types.

If we want to add new protocol serialization (such as PB or Avro) we would add a new package similar to protocolR23Compatible. I have added a placeholder for PB. We can also support multiple protocols very easily and pick the right one based on SS (one critical piece is missing for this - I will file the jira).

The following key steps remain after this jira is committed

        • HDFS-2400 HDFS wire types are segregated, move the HDFS data types from o.a.h.hdfs.protocol to o.a.h.hdfs.server.
        • HDFS-2399 HDFS wire types are segregated, remove all Writable from HDFS data type
        • HADOOP-7719 On protocol version mismatch, return the list of valid versions for the requested protocol
        • HADOOP-7557 Make IPC and RPC headers be extensible
        • Pick the protocol dynamically based on SS's protocol versions. I think this can wait till later.

I will post patches for Hadoop-7719 and Hadoop-7557 shortly. HDFS-2399 and HDFS-2400 can probably wait a little till some system testing is done. Indeed if leave them as it will let us switch back to old ways by a simple 2 line change in DFSUtil if we need to deal with any serious issues.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. The general architecture makes sense. It will be a bit of a pain to maintain, I think, but the benefits are probably worth it.

        A few general comments:

        • Can we prefix all of the classes in protocolR23Compatible with the string "R23"? So we have "R23Block" as the wire type and "Block" as the internal type? Or "R23WBlock" to stand for R23 Writable Block, perhaps? My thinking is that it will make the translator code easier to read because we don't need to fully qualify all of the wire types with the really long package name. It may also help in debugging since the short class name will differ. This is also helpful when developers use autocomplete in the IDE - we don't want to accidentally import the wire types into internal code.
        • Do we really need to duplicate the javadoc "The specification of this method matches that of ..." for every method in the R23 protocols? Just seems like a lot of boilerplate that will cause javadoc warnings later if we add arguments to existing methods in the non-wire protocol interface.

        A few nits:

        • Need an extra ". " in this concatenation:
          + throw new IOException("Namenode Serverside implements "
          + + ClientNamenodeProtocol.class
          +        + "The following requested protocol is unknown: " + protocol);

        • There are a few spots where methods have arguments called arg0, arg1, etc.
        • The constants GET_STATS_CAPACITY_IDX, etc, should probably be part of the generic protocol, not the R23 protocol, since the FSNamesystem method itself returns the array of longs. Perhaps we can just file a follow-up JIRA to replace this with some kind of FileSystemStats class instead of the somewhat ugly array?

        Thanks for the feedback.

        • Prefix. The right thing to do is to add a suffix Writable - ie BlockWritable (just like BlockProto). As we add new types in future releases, the protocol version will NOT change (recall the rule - add new types and new methods). This makes sense because at some point we will remove writables from all other HDFS types. I can make that change.
        • Javadoc - It took a lot of time to put it. Given that it is done I prefer to leave it in since it will not be too bad to maintain. I did a similar thing for AbstractFileSystem and the main motivation was that we could hand this to a QA person to write compatibility tests. It is kind of convenient "cursor over" when one is reading code in Eclipse.
        • nits - will fix.
        • arg0 arg1 - I copied the code from old types ... will fix.
        • @Todd "... GET_STATS_CAPACITY_IDX .. follow on Jira" - Agree.

        Hi Sanjay. One question:

As we add new types in future releases, the protocol version will NOT change (recall the rule - add new types and new methods)

Is that still true, after this feature? I thought that, with this new protocol selection feature, we would simply duplicate the "protocolR23" package to "protocolR24" when R24 was released, etc? So we only had to worry about method/field compatibility within a release, but between releases, we could change the wire format as we liked?

There are two ways to support compatibility: (see the doc i posted in HADOOP-7347)

        1. Maintain compatibility by simply adding new methods and new types (ie no changes to signatures of existing methods)
        2. Have the server support multiple protocols and the client picking the right one (we need to figure out a way for the
client to pick the right protocol based on what the server supports - i have ideas on this but have not supplied a patch so far.)

I am proposing that we use #1 (within and across releases) till we move to PB or Avro. Say we move to PB in release 25 (hypothetically) then release 24 can continue to use R23.
When we move to PB or Avro we use approach 2 since customer will expect compatibility across releases. BTW approach 2 can also be used to support compatibility between 20 and 23.

I assume that I have your +1 having addressed your feedback and will commit this patch later tonight.

        • The javadoc for closeConnectionToNamenode has some strange formatting/indentation. Small typo: "orcreated"
        • Can you use IOUtils.closeStream there? Or at least log the exception if there's a problem.
        • Can we rename ClientDatanodeProtocolTranslator to R23ClientDatanodeProtocolTranslator, etc?
        • "Until version 69, this class ClientProtocol servers as both" has an extra space between "Until" and "version", and should be "serves as both" not "servers as both"
        • in AdminStates.fromValue, if the value isn't in the enum, returning NORMAL seems incorrect - maybe it should throw an exception or return a new UNKNOWN value?
        • the class name ClientNamenodeProtocolWritable implies that this class is a writable, when in fact it's an interface... maybe rename to ClientNamenodeWritableWireProtocol? or just ClientNamenodeWireProtocol? Elsewhere we have the strong convention that *Writable implements Writable

after fixing those, +1 from me
