Not sure what's expected here. This is a generic issue of a service not being able to start up without proper configuration. We already have the same behavior in NameNode and quite a few other things. The only difference being that the exception message goes to the .log/.out instead of a console.

Are you asking to make it disappear from the console?

The NoClassDefFoundError seems different than a misconfiguration issue. Does the configuration requires to point to a specific class?

If the service cannot be started out of the box, we probably should not start it on installation.

Does it make sense to include this configuration in /etc/default/bigtop-utils?

I am pretty sure I saw this in 0.4 when start the zkfc service daemon with "service hadoop-hdfs-zkfc start".

This was because there was a new zkfc hadoop command added via https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-3223
However, Hadoop 2.0.0-alpha (in Bigtop 0.4.0) didn't have that patch in it but Hadoop 2.0.2-alpha (in Bigtop 0.5.0) does.
I verified the latest Bigtop artifacts and the package installs correctly.
