Neat! I'd rather have email addresses for subscription in their canonical subscribe form, e.g.
        user-subscribe@bigtop.apache.org
        dev-subscribe@bigtop.apache.org
        What do you think?

it's not wrong: just this address is for the list itself; to subscribe one needs to use a different one.
Now, I think we might add more info on what we have in the stack. Let's add the stack description like this

        • Storage
          • Hadoop HDFS/HCFS
        • Data Processing
          • HBase
          • Hive/Pig
          • Spark
          • Solr
        • UX/Management
          • Oozie
          • Hue

I was also thinking that perhaps we can emphasize the fact that commercial distros are using Bigtop as their basis by direct reference of some sorts. "Powered by Bigtop" so to speak: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/BIGTOP/Powered+By+Bigtop

Or do you guys think it would be questionable?

I thought simply mentioning this fact would be enough. As this is about the project rather then bragging about who uses it then that would suffice. But if ppl think that direct link to the "Powered By" page is needed - it could be added. The fliers aren't yet in print.

Some initial thoughts based on comments and flyer example:

-should target to make flyer look like new website design

-should be more graphical in nature, little to no text. for example, having little intro/overview paragraph/sentences, but then visual section for "components supported" with logos of the related projects, then maybe another visual block of content for "os support"

-if doing qrcode just do to homepage, lets use qrcode service but redirected from url shortener (shorter the url better error correction there is in the codes and smaller you can make them)

-with new direction group is looking to promote by focusing on data science usage vs just hadoop infrastructure/packaging should start to push that with some verbage

-instead of powered by content.., maybe "Companies that contribute to bigtop".., with logos from any company we can get approval from

-maybe a little snippet quote from someone (trend micro maybe?) with persons name.., kind of like "bigtop helps our infrastructure team delivery a bigdata platform that is superbly packaged, QA'd and deployed allowing our data engineers to focus on what matter most, getting answers to their questions -Bob Smith, Dir of Something, TrendMicro)

Feel free to qoute me if you need one... We've used bigtop's tests for some time and its been very beneficial to us and the HCFS initiative. At Red Hat, Apache BigTop's easily consumed big data distribution and smoke tests allow us to validate, install, deploy, and test cutting edge hadoop related technology in a manner that is synergistic with community oriented innovation .

I was the one who pushed for the use of actual website URL instead of a shortener's version. But I am ok with either.

Should I just reach out to folks to get try and get approval?

Roman Shaposhnik Konstantin Boudnik Peter Linnell jay vyas can you guys drop appropriate contacts for your org for approval? I can deal with marshalling messages for any approval process

Think more visually pleasing and eye catching if we can just use logos to communicate most all the content for the companies leveraging/using, and core components verse just couple lines of text

So having block of content like: "Companies Using Bigtop"

        Then have cloudera/hworks/rhat/aws/etc

And a similar block for the components with hadoop/hbase, etc..., supported OS's maybe too

So basically approval would be if for instance wandisco didn't want their logo on the flyer

Putting on a different hat, lets say a product marketing one, and looking at bigtop as a solution the group is selling to people to get usage out of.., think its a numbers/lead-gen game just like selling commercial software. More people you get using, more bugs and usage improvement feedback comes to the group.., and eventually contributions even if just tests, docs, new components, etc.

Instead of looking at it through lens of giving credit to these companies.., I like to look at it as an in increased % opportunity to get someones attention of what bigtop is, why it matters, along lines of "if aws, pivotal, etc are all using it for bigdata deployments, why aren't you?" Showing logos of large "important" companies using it has WAY more effect than saying in line of text "all commercial and open source distributions use bigtop".

You guys decide, my main pt is instead of all text flyer should try and make more visual communication

Looking solely from a design perspective I actually agree with Nate DAmico, that's quite a bit of text to put on a flyer, ideally we'll be able to make the main points stand out without people having to read anything in paragraph form... Plus, even though there's nothing wrong with that, it seems a bit redundant to include the website's text and provide a link which will open the same exact information when anyone visits online. Nothing detrimental, but maybe a bit obnoxious to have to read through paragraphs when the flyer should just have some variation of bulleted info?

These are all great points. I just have no creative knack to express them I have a meeting with our marketing ppl tomorrow am - let's see what they can offer.

If anyone has something else to bring to the table in terms of the design - that'd be great too!

Konstantin Boudnik et al.., did up a mock design along lines of what my initial comments referred to. More visual.., used website design as a basis.

Think proper designs could cleanup layout and scaling.., especially slimming up the top banner a maybe get this down to 1/2 pager and we could get double per 8.5/11 page we print. If possible better to have smaller more consumable content

It's pretty good really! Thanks Nate! I still hold to the point that we shouldn't be doing a shout for the commercial entities, especially considering the fact that we the contribution from some of them dwindling to nothingness. Shall we just point to Bigtop's "Powered By" page instead?

I'd rather have a section that would say something like: Available on all major distributions of Linux and put their logos

Let me point our marketing to these mock-up and see what they can come with...

Will leave it up to you and rest o group to decide on logos and whatnot, don't think its worth it to point to powered by page, really what flyers job is to create an emotional response in the reader that says "this sounds/looks interesting, I should go look at it more when I have some more time"

Even though contributions are important to open source projects, looking at it again from a product mindset perspective.., would you much rather have 15 core contributors and 50 users.., or 10 core contributors and 500 users? What is mattering more to the project at this point.., active contributors.., or growing the exposure and usage of the tools/framework?

Anyways.., let me know if anything else is needed once marketing folkal start working on latest rev.., I will be turning my attention to workshop content this weekend so can get draft posted to Scale website next week and we have outline and goal to work towards next couple weeks for "classroom content"
