Subentries are special administrative entries in the server. So they cannot be retrieved unless a specific search control is used.
"Subentry Control" is defined in RFC3672, Section 3. It is implemented in trunks/apacheds/core/src/main/java/org/apache/directory/server/core/subtree/SubentryService.java and its usage is demonstrated in trunks/apacheds/server-unit/src/test/java/org/apache/directory/server/SearchTest.java.
So, having an option in search operations to toggle Subentry Control would be great.
