Apache DS already (0.9.1) provides the vendorName attribute. It would be nice if it would also include the vendorVersion attribute.
Some tools display the information or use it for server detection. It would make this task easier for tool vendors. This is definitely not a very important feature, but it looks better to the user if the client is able to state something different to "Vendor is unknown or impossible to detect" (real world example of a popular tool).
From RFC 3045 ("Storing Vendor Information in the LDAP root DSE")
vendorVersion
This attribute contains a string which represents the version of the LDAP server implementation.
