There is a parameter -Dweblogic.RootDirectory= that can be used to allow the caller to start up a weblogic domain outside of the domain directory. If this could be added to the cactus ant tasks and the maven plugin this would allow for the startup of the container from within the maven project.
This parameter points to the domain that contains the config.xml of the domain you are starting. This is for weblogic 8.1
