Try to get a few OpenType reference fonts that can be distributed with FOP for testing and demonstration. Ask some font editors. The fonts could be crippled if they want, for example by removing portions of the glyph sets.
Free fonts can be found at: http://www.nongnu.org/freefont/ Unfortunately they are not for immediate download in otf format, but can be converted using: http://fontforge.sourceforge.net/ hth Max
Unfortunetely the fonts I've just mentioned are GPL, but maybe we can ask the freefont people to provide downloadable OTF versions?
I've emailed the following companies to ask for a possible donation of some fonts for testing purposes: http://www.underware.nl/ - info (at) underware.nl http://www.emigre.com - info (at) emigre.com Let's hope these info@ addresses go somewhere else than the spamcan...
Both companies from comment #3 have replied negatively. One of them suggested trying the OpenType mailing list, either http://topica.com/lists/opentype/read or opentype-list@indx.co.uk .
The DejaVu Fonts have a very liberal license which may be compatible with the ASL: http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/License The are also available for download in SFD (FontForge) format, which can be used to create OpenType fonts. Also, the Stixfonts (bug #40468) are now scheduled for a beta release for the end of this month. Be warned though, that previous promised dates have always been pushed back.
FYI, Harmony got a green light for using the DejaVu fonts: http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/200707.mbox/%3cc3755b3a0707170028n648b5f8clce80ca0be58dd854@mail.gmail.com%3e Means, we can use them, too.
Just because I am really happy about this fact, I've downloaded the dejavu sources and converted them to otf. The results are available at: http://max.berger.name/tmp/dejavu-otf-2.18.zip (7.7MB, for a limited time) Steps to reproduce: - download recent fontforge - download dejavu sfd sources - modify generate.pe to produce .otf instead of .ttf - run generate.sh, ingore error in postprocess script - results are in generated/ To test all OTF features, the generation may have to be run with different parameters, which would require more modification to the .pe file. I am not sure which features are present in these files.
Stixfonts are now available: www.stixfonts.org according to their page the license is liberal enough to be included with OSS projects, but it may be a good idea to check with apache legal.
